Otto Bayer was a famous Chemist. His greatest discovery was the invention of polyurethane chemistry. At that time, people did not believe in his new ideas of mixing chemical substances together and obtaining dry foam materials. However, Professor Otto Bayer did not give up his research and very soon he had made an amazing new substance called polyurethane foam. Only about ten years later did people start using his wonderful new discovery to make different products from polyurethane foam. He also began the development of a new group of plastics. Otto Bayer was the person who gave the world ‘polyurethane’. He was the one who invented the fundamental process of diisocyanate polyaddition. If he were alive today, he would have been extremely proud of the developments with the use of polyurethane. This substance has been used in so many ways. It is popular in building, construction, apparel, electronics, automotive and medical fields. Polyurethane is used in different forms all over the world. Polyurethane has many uses. All kinds of foams are manufactured from polyurethane. Flexible foam is used in upholstery; rigid foams are placed inside the walls of refrigerators and freezers. Thermal insulation panels are also made from this substance. Flexible and semi-flexible foams are also used in car seats, head rests and arm rests. Car seats are made in an interesting manner. The car manufacturer has a mould that he uses. He pours the polyurethane into that mold. It is upholstered after being removed from the mold. Foam manufacturing has made our lives easier in a number of ways. Because of foam manufacturing, we have comfortable mattresses to lie on and very soft cushions and pillows. Can you believe that Polyurethane has the type of delicate fibers that makes lovely stretchable garments? Besides this it is also used in electronics, furniture, sealing of cracks, furnishings, flooring, medical applications and packaging. Waterborne polyurethane dispersions are coatings. They are also used as adhesives. Foam lamination is done in the shoe and furniture industry. A foam lamination is also needed in the manufacture of fabrics. Polyurethane paint is very durable and used to coat garage doors. It is also more elastic than any other paint. It can withstand harsh sunlight and is not so prone to wear and tear. It can be tinted if you so desire. It works just like any other paint. They give a hard and glossy finish so they look nice.
